The unnecessarily high effort remake-sequel to a random thing I made in 2019 and forgot about is finally here...! (Don't worry if you have no idea what the original is, it's completely irrelevant.)

The intended purpose of this is to generate (very abstract ideas) for character designs. Basically it's a little art challenge toy thingy...

Instead of a detailed physical description of a character like some other Google search results for "character idea generator" will give you, this one only gives you a combination of symbols, colors, and a word. Because of this, it should hopefully be mostly agnostic to what kind of characters you might like to draw, and is only concerned with giving you a thematic direction. (You could probably also use it to make things that aren't centered around characters at all if you wanted to...It's really nonspecific.)

Instructions:

- Press the big button on the right to randomize the things on the left. You can also press the "R" key on your keyboard.

- You can press the lock buttons on the left to stop a category from changing when you press the randomize button. This is useful if you like part of a result but not the rest of it.

- Pressing the X buttons below the lock buttons will disable the display of that particular category so that you don't have to look at it.

- You can now also use the lock and disable functions by holding "L" or "X" on your keyboard, respectively, then pressing the 1, 2, or 3 keys.

- When you get a result you like then you can draw a picture about it or whatever it is you do.

- If you press "J" on your keyboard it will have an effect.

Hypothetical Questions You May Or May Not Have:

Q: "Can I use my results for blablablabla purpose?"

A: No I own all shapes and colors in the entire world. (This is a joke) (I do not care what you do.)

Q: "These adjectives are really unhelpful like what am I supposed to do with 'Ethical'???"

A: Out of concern for written language detracting from the vagueness of the rest of the results, some of the items in the word list were intentionally chosen to be slightly difficult to work with. (Not all of them though)

You can always lock the rest of the result and then regenerate the word, or just ignore the word part of the generation entirely. Who is going to stop you? Not me. I don't care.

Q: "There's a bug of some kind!?"

A: I honestly don't really know how that could have happened given how simple this thing is, but I guess if you describe it I can try to fix it...

Q: "There's not a Mac/Linux download?"

A: I don't have computers to test those on, so I couldn't be bothered...Just use the web version. Or if the download is really that important to you then you could try Wine, maybe. I don't know if that still works.

Q: "This isn't mobile friendly like at all? :("

A: I failed to think about this when setting up the UI...For now you may simply be out of luck, unless I decide to update this to reconstruct the UI to be more vertical, or otherwise make a mobile version.
One thing you can try is to put your mobile browser into desktop mode, and that probably still won't look right, but at least might make it possible for you to actually press the button...This isn't really a proper solution though and it might not work on your device, it's just the best I was able to manage in my testing.

Q: "I like the sound effects, where are they from?"

A: I had to phrase this in a strange way to get it to be a question! The sound effects are from Kenney's audio assets, I think specifically the Interface Sounds. They don't require attribution but I figured I should add a credit because people kept saying they liked the sound effects. ^^;

*Ahem* I have but one question. What's the shape that kindaaa looks like a hand gun but looks like a charger for the grip? I honestly have no idea how else to explain it- kinda looks like it could be either a gun, a charger, or a scarf. Maybe a hand puppet?? ^^'

It's a scarf

Hey, nothing I'm confused about anymore, but I just wanted to say I've made more than one oc I really love with the help of this generator, and friends have too! It's been really fun!

Hello, I liked the idea of the program, but I want a Linux version AppImage

Man i love procrastinating

EXTREMELY LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER

Promot: (Telephone, rainbow, mail), "Incorrect"

I like the concept though, quick and simple way to get some ideas

Hey, I really love one shape in here, but I just can't figure out one of the shapes! I'm not sure if it's a piece of coral, an antler, or a stick! I would go into the files myself, but I'm on apple, and I can only use the version on this page. I probably won't be the only person to be confused on the items, so maybe you can add a list of what the things are called? Or maybe a label /nf (i know these things can be a lot of work, but i am not the only dumb person on this earth who cant figure things out sometimes :])

Oh that one is supposed to be an antler! Though personally I think it's fine if you interpret any of the shapes however you like, coral could be cool... (and your saying it also looked like a stick reminded me  I meant to put a leaf in here but forgot to. I will have to try to remember that whenever I update this next.)

I'll consider the idea of making a list of everything that's in here though! It would be a bit long and hard to maintain if I update it though. (I was vaguely considering putting the source code up somewhere, so the list would maintain itself in that case if it was just all the files, but I'm still kind of confused by software licenses so I haven't done that yet...)

Ah, thanks for clarifying! And I understand, its a lot of hard work to do all this, so no rush. The only other object that confused me was one I found a while later (i generated a lot, so guess i was just unlucky not to come across it earlier). It looks like like a triangle with the top tip off of it and a circle inside. The bottom side has a rectangle with a zig-zag in it. That one really puzzled me!

It took me a minute to figure out what you were talking about  but that one was meant to be a zipper! (The triangle part being the pull and the zig-zag part being the teeth) That was one of the ones I drew for the original version of this like 5 years ago and didn't bother to redraw so maybe it's a little hard to parse...

Ooo this is neat! I'm curious, are the palets premade ones or are they 3 random colors? Mainly asking because I got the Bi flag colors while clicking the button a few times lol.

All the colors are made of randomized RGB values! So that's just a funny coincidence (in my experience it feels like I get the French flag from it a lot...)

Neat!
